REPERTOIRE: Learning, memorizing, and performing a varied and balanced program of differing musical styles at each student’s highest level of artistic potential is the central focus of the Studio. Therefore, each student is required to learn, memorize, and perform literature from the standard eras of art music: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary (20th and/or 21st century). Each year, students are required to learn, memorize, and perform works from ALL FOUR of the above referenced style periods. In addition, some students will also learn Impressionistic works. The students will learn in their lessons which styles are represented by the pieces they are learning.
CONCERTO: The music studied will consist of solo piano works and a movement of a concerto; every student is required to learn, memorize, and perform a movement from a concerto each year as well, in addition to solo literature representing all four major musical eras. The concerto must be performed on the Annual Concerto Concert unless the Studio permits a later performance in the year due to special circumstances.
BEGINNERS: The primary focus for beginners is establishing and building proficient reading skills, technical skills, and musical skills. Until a beginning student is past the method book level, his/her requirements will consist of a daily technical regimen (determined by the teacher) and assignments from a method book and corresponding supplementary repertoire, technique, and theory books. Repertoire for beginners for studio concerts and other performances (including the concerto concert) will be determined appropriately throughout the year as student progress is evaluated during lessons. Beginners as defined in this section will not necessarily follow the repertoire requirement and distribution as outlined in the Repertoire section.
REPERTOIRE SCHEDULE and MAINTENANCE: Each student will be informed in advance as to the expected date for which each piece assigned should be learned, memorized, and in tempo. In addition, pieces already learned and performed may be required to be maintained for competitive events or festivals at a later date in the academic year.
